Nutrition Counseling

Comprehensive Nutrition Plans

Nutrition counseling will focus on incorporating whole, plant-based foods, and minimizing or eliminating animal products, processed foods, and added oils and sugars. There is extensive scientific literature demonstrating the benefits of following these dietary principles in preventing and reversing some of our most common chronic diseases including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, coronary artery disease, stroke, peripheral artery disease, prostate and breast cancer, and dementia.

Our initial individual consultation will help to clarify a patient’s goals and motivations. We will seek to determine whether the goal is to reverse progression or prevent complications from an already established chronic disease, or to prevent one of these illnesses from developing in the future. Some clients may be seeking a healthy plan to lose weight and feel more energetic, while others may hope to improve upon an already healthy lifestyle.

We will gather information on baseline body composition using the Tanita scale. This uses bioimpedance to determine segmental fat, muscle, and water composition, and has shown to be very accurate when compared to gold-standard DEXA scans. For those who are interested, we will also perform testing of antioxidant levels with the Pharmanex Biophotonic scanner and conduct in-house blood tests to assess cholesterol, blood sugar, and markers of inflammation.

As part of this information-gathering stage, we will review food journals and historical dietary data. We may encourage use of nutrition tracking apps such as Myfitnesspal. This data will allow us to provide specific dietary recommendations and discuss hurdles which may make healthy eating more difficult such as food allergies, dietary preferences, family dynamics, time constraints, or financial concerns.

Each patient has a unique situation, and our goal is to individualize our educational guidance and nutrition recommendations based on where the patient is in his own health journey. Every week we will assess what changes the client is willing and able to make and agree on a plan that will ensure success. With every subsequent visit, we will review challenges and achievements, and continue to motivate the patient to progress.
